Connections Between Practices in NGSS, Common Core Math, and Common Core ELA

In this archived web seminar from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), Dr. Sarah Michaels (Clark University) talks about connecting the scientific and engineering practices described in A Framework for K–12 Science Education with the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts.

Third in a series of three programs, this web seminar provides insight into NGSS by discussing strategies for connecting math and literacy with the eight scientific and engineering practices. Dr. Michaels begins the presentation by discussing the commonalities between NGSS and Common Core. She identifies productive student discussion as the central activity essential to all three sets of standards, shares videos demonstrating the key elements of teacher-guided, productive talk, and then provides strategies and resources to help build teachers’ capacity for guiding discussion in the classroom.
